Explaining Shadows in Year 3



The students in Mrs McMurray's class began to explore their learning of shadows in Science by documenting answers to key questions in their digital journals, made with Explain Everything app. In pairs, the class learned to type their key questions and then record their responses using the audio recorder. Also, the students learned to edit their responses and string them together in one recording to match their response to the written question, thus considering the viewer of their work. Further, the students learned to use the drawing tools to draw what a shadow could look like based on the discussions they had with their partners and the class while recording their answers to their key questions. Next the class will draw the same shadow example using the shapes tool to help ensure their diagram is a model labelled diagram with a title, names and a line to connect the names with the parts of the drawing. They will also explore how shadows change by drawing a labelled shadow diagram at different times of the day and record an explanation of how it changed.

Data tables in Pages app incorporate many of the features of the Numbers app for organising and representing data. The students in Mr. Dowding's class continued their learning of data in Maths by creating a rock, paper, scissors game with Microbits. The class learned to use if/else logic to create the code for their game which included drawing their own symbols for each option to appear on the LED screen. The choices ranged from letter indicators for rock, paper, scissors to totally different symbols for the student's own game creations. Innovating Talk for Writing Stories in KK

T he students in Mrs McCulloch's class continued to learn their talk for writing stories by using the draw and tell app for the 'invention' stage of their writing (or in this case oral story telling). Having previously 'imitated' Brown Bear, Brown Bear and then 'innovated' the story to create a class text or 'Stripy tiger, Stripy tiger' the students were assisted to create a Draw and Tell video of their own story with visual prompts for the 5 senses contained in the innovated story e.g. I see a... I hear a.....etc. This enabled the students to showcase their learning of repetitive story structures, use describing words and their understanding of their 5 senses (as they have been learning for Science.).

Data Collection, Representation and Analysis in Year 5/6

The students in Mr. Dowding's class learned to collect, represent and analyse data from their Microbit Step Counter (Pedometer) tests to make an informed analysis about which part of the body provides the most reliable reading of steps. The students inputted their tests into a normal spreadsheet before learning how to create a bar graph of the data. The students then learned to manipulate the X & Y axis and other labels and values on their graph to make it easier to analyse. The class then used Pages app to import their graphs to highlight their analysis, describe it and record this.
